Dreaming of a White Christmas

White Christmas is the show that first had me hooked on musicals. It has been a holiday tradition with my family since I was tiny and something I can always count on my whole family sitting down and enjoying together on Christmas Day.
That's not to say that I don't indulge on the music the rest of the year because I totally do. That's one of the things I like best about this show is that because it's a conglomeration of Irving Berlin songs, it's not just all about Christmas. There's a little sisterly love, some dancing, some silly songs about choreography, Mr. Bones and even songs to drive your sister named Amanda crazy!

Not only are the songs and dances some of my favorites, but some of my favorite costumes ever are from this show. Aside from the white gloves that give Betty a serious case of the man hands, the whole look from "Love You Didn't Do Right By Me" is truly perfect and timeless.

  • Favorite Character:  Betty
I think for a movie that was released in 1954, White Christmas does a really good job of making Betty an actual character instead of just a love interest for Bing Crosby.
  • Favorite Song:  "Love You Didn't Do Right By Me"
I could probably write a whole book on how much I love this song, but to spare you the long read, I'll just post the video link and I think you'll understand. (And, a special cameo from young Bernardo at 1:05.) Also, I challenge you to find me an Alto who doesn't love this song.

  • Favorite Scene:  It's a tie between "Choreography" and the dancing in "The Best Things Happen While You're Dancing"
I dare you to watch this scene and try to take your eyes from Vera-Ellen. You can't. She's just so flawless. And her DRESS and glamour pony? I officially cannot. It's too beautiful.


  • Favorite Lyric:  "To send me a beau who had winter and snow in his heart, wasn't smart" from "Love You Didn't Do Right By Me" (Basically that whole song is my favorite lyric...sue me.)
  • Favorite Cast Recording:  The movie soundtrack, but the 2006 cast recording is becoming a quick new fave because of the added songs and I think Anastasia Barzee is a pretty decent (albeit a little more modern sounding) replacement for my girl Rosemary.

I'm lucky enough to have spent the last few months in rehearsal for a really special production of A Christmas Carol at Centerpoint Legacy Theatre (CPT). With music by Alan Menken (the man behind all your favorite Disney stuff) and lyrics by Lynn Aherns (the woman behind Ragtime and Anastasia ) it is so joyful and catchy. Now I'm always a little emotional when I'm watching something on stage. Sometimes it's from the music, sometimes it's purely just an outlet for how happy I am to be watching the show (or how happy I am for the people that get to be performing it it), but very rarely do I get emotional about shows that I perform in. Picking a Song - The Audition Chronicles

The walls in my mind are wallpapered with one question in bold, all caps font: WHAT SONG SHOULD I AUDITION WITH?!? I think about it obsessively. I talk to my husband about it constantly (sorry, honey), I've even tried to get some  tips  from the pros. And somehow still come up blank with each new audition. I'm gonna level with you. I haven't been cast in two years and I'm questioning everything. I'm honestly one audition away from singing the Ducktales theme song . (But like...don't you think in the right setting that this would be brilliant?) But since you've come here hopefully looking for advice and not to sulk with me about my song choice woes, here's what I know. Part III - The Future

*Read Part I and Part II * So I guess this series of posts was to give you, the reader, some context on where I've come from  and  why I went away for a  little  while. But these posts also serve as the official end to my unintentional hiatus.  I’m in a growing season of my life and I’m still figuring out what I want this space to be. I still have so much I want to talk about and I want people to connect with about it.  Looking back with a clearer head and little more thickness in my skin, I realize that these posts were always for me. I was the one who needed to learn how to get over rejection. It was me who needed to feel like the work behind the scenes can still be fulfilling. But most importantly I needed a place to talk about what I love, why I love it and hope that other people would feel the same way. So I hope that you’ll stick around and share your thoughts.
