Today seemed like a day in desperate need of an anthem.
I am a huge fan of Tina Fey AND movies from my high school years being turned into musicals so this is twofer.
I'm anxiously waiting this OBC (Original Broadway Cast Recording) that drops digitally on May 18, but here's a sample that everyone should have memorized before then.

The Pirates of Penzance; or, The Slave of Duty by W. S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan is a comedic opera. It tells the story of Frederic, a young man who has just been released from his pirate apprenticeship and is looking to live an upstanding life. Frederic meets Mabel and falls in love, but due to a most ingenious paradox learns that his apprenticeship isn't over and he must remain true to his pirate duties. Will Mabel wait for him? Will the rest of his pirate band find happiness too? I will begrudgingly own up to the following things: 1. I am not terribly familiar with anything Gilbert and Sullivan. 2. I've seen Penzance two other times in my life and struggle to remember the plot. 3. I am afraid of opera because I'm worried I won't "get it" and feel dumb. 1957 would prove to be a good year for Broadway. The Music Man , Carousel and Brigadoon  all opened that year, but I think the show that would come to change the face of musical theatre the most when it came to how music and dancing are used to tell a story is West Side Story . In the September 27, 1957 edition of the New Herald Tribune , journalist Walter Kerr wrote in his review of opening night:  "The radioactive fallout from West Side Story must still be descending on Broadway this morning." (Source:  Saturday Evening Post ) I think I understand a little of what Mr. Kerr must have meant by "radioactive fallout." I saw a production of West Side Story last year, almost 60 years since it's opening night, and still can't think about it without getting teary-eyed. Behind the Scenes: Spencer Potter costumes Spring Awakening

I've been pretty lucky in my life to know people who love theatre as much as I do and who have pursued it as a career. One of those people is Spencer Potter. I've known Spencer since high school when he was busy acting in all of the shows, painting all of the sets and props and making amazing beards and now that we're grown up - he's had some of the coolest jobs all over the country. His MFA from Utah State University is in Theatre Arts with an emphasis in scenic and costume design means he can pretty much do it all, but his most recent gig is as an Assistant Professor of Theatre at Westminster College, a liberal arts college in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was kind enough to let me be his shadow for a couple of days to learn about the process of costuming a show. I was even more excited to learn that the show he was working on was Spring Awakening - one of my favorites.
