Tony Tony Tony!
I've recently become a regular awards show watcher - usually for the pretty dresses and sparkly diamonds, but the Tony's take it to the next level. Pretty things to look at AND to listen to. This year was kind of fun because it appeared to be the first Tony's in the last two years that didn't have a clear show sweep in the cards. (I'm looking at you Hamilton and Dear Evan Hansen.) What a foolish thing to think!
I clearly needed to be better prepared by listening to/knowing the plot of The Band's Visit. I watched with my sweet parents who both asked me what it was about and I sadly couldn't tell them. Excuse me while I immerse myself in the cast recording for the next couple of days.
Here are some of the things I loved about this year's Tony's:
The step and repeat - it's like last year's wall bloomed! (Sara and Joe met during Waitress workshops. Ugh. I love a good show people romance.)
The theatre people fashion.
I appreciate colorful suits and bold choices. Look at that coordination!
Mama Will Provide!
The clip from the show isn't up yet, but you must find a way to watch it if you can.
In the mean time - listen to Alex Newell kill this song.
Speaking of Once On This Island - they won!
You have to read about (Tony winner!) Tyler Mount here - he's basically living my dream.
My truly favorite parts were the messages of inclusion and diversity. I love how theatre brings people together from all different races, religions and backgrounds to tell a story. Your unique perspective on the world can provide a further layer to your character, or to the show's meaning, or to your understanding as an audience member. You are needed and accepted and understood. I particularly liked what John Leguizamo said: "Theatre teaches you to understand other people. How to feel empathy for those who are not like us."
